A 30-year-old Silobela woman was arrested for assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm after assaulting her 10-year-old cousin.
The 10 year old grade 4 learner was at school when the teacher noticed something was wrong with the learner, who had a bruise next to the left ear, and the child told the teacher about her ordeal, who then alerted the Carolina SAPS School Safety Officer, who attended the complaint and visited the family.
The docket was openedĀ and the child was taken to Carolina Hospital for medical treatment.
It is claimed that on Sunday, February 19, around 15:30, the victim’s cousin came home angry and took the child to the room, locked it, and assaulted the child with a belt, despite the child’s cries for help and forgiveness. The mother, who was in the kitchen, could not help as the door was locked from the inside.
After assaulting the child, she told them they could report her to the police, who would find her at her place of residence.
She was arrested on February 22, 2023, and appeared in Carolina Magistrate Court on February 23, 2023, where she was granted R1000 bail; she is scheduled to return to the same court on March 29, 2023.
