Six suspects are facing various charges following a high-density, multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation conducted in Barberton from September 30 into the early hours of October 1.
The operation was led by Ehlanzeni District Commissioner Major General Dorah Xaba and involved police and other law enforcement agencies, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Sergeant Thulisile Magagula.
During a roadblock along the R438, officers arrested a 30-year-old foreign national for allegedly contravening the Immigration Act.
Three other suspects, aged between 26 and 34, were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of explosives. Police also established that the suspects were unable to produce the required documentation to prove their legal status in the country. Cases were opened for further investigation.
In Extension 10, police arrested a 25-year-old man for the alleged unlawful possession of two firearms and live ammunition. The firearms and ammunition were seized and will form part of the investigation.
Police also arrested a person for allegedly selling liquor without a licence.
Meanwhile, traffic officials conducted a roadblock along the R40 and issued 10 infringement notices to motorists.
The operation included high-visibility patrols, searches and inspections at shopping centres, banks, ATMs, businesses, spaza shops, health facilities, liquor outlets, taverns, taxi ranks, bus terminals and other identified hotspots.
According to police, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to address crime and strengthen law enforcement visibility in Barberton.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court in due course.
