The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM) has taken urgent steps to address ongoing water supply challenges affecting Ekulindeni and surrounding areas, particularly in Wards 12 and 19.
According to CALM pokesperson Thapelo Phetla, the recent water interruptions were caused by the failure of Motor Control Centre (MCC) panels at the local water treatment plant. The panels were reportedly damaged after being struck by lightning, which caused them to burn out and left the plant inoperable.
Phetla confirmed that the municipality has already removed the damaged MCC panels, and the installation of new panels is currently underway. Technical teams are working around the clock to ensure that the system is restored as quickly as possible.
Based on the progress made so far, the municipality expects the plant to return to normal operation by Saturday, April 25. Once the new panels are fully commissioned, water supply will be gradually restored to affected communities.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank the residents of Wards 12 and 19 for their patience and understanding during this time,” said Phetla.
In the interim, water tankers continue to be deployed to strategic points across the affected areas to provide temporary relief.
Residents are urged to use water sparingly while repair work continues.
The municipality has reassured communities that restoring reliable water supply remains a top priority and that every effort is being made to resolve the issue without further delays.
