The Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) stall was a hype of activity as pupils took turns in gathering information during the Aviation Youth Show hosted by South African Civil Aviation Authority and the National Department of Transport.
The event which took place at the Highveld Comprehensive High School and Takheni Secondary School at Elukwatini, Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality on Wednesday, 18 March was held under the theme: “Transforming the Aviation Industry” with a special focus on pupils from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, was part of a build-up for the
Mpumalanga Province Presidential Imbizo, which President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to host at the Silobela Stadium in Carolina on Friday, 20 May.
The pupils from the two local schools were introduced to over 45 careers in the aviation industry, which included: Flight Operations Careers; Airworthiness Careers; Careers at Airports; Aviation Security Careers; Aircraft Accident Investigation Careers; Air Traffic Careers; Aerospace Engineering; Airports Careers; and Transport Careers.
Mr. Phiwokuhle Nkosi and Portia Malindisa who are licensed drone pilots from the Department of Planning, Economic Development and Innovation accompanied by the General Manager, Mr. Mthandeni Mkhonza who is also a licensed drone pilot all thanks to GSDM, manned the GSDM stall during the exhibition and shared from their wealth of experience in the aviation industry and also about the recent establishment of the GSDM Aerospace Industrial Hub which is an applaudable innovative move in particular within the context of local government in the Gert Sibande District and the Mpumalanga province at large.
