A 33-year-old Mozambican national, Claudia Macheque, has been arrested in Mooiplaas, Elukwatini, for the illegal possession of explosives and contravention of the Immigration Act.
According to Elukwatini police station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Wiseman Nkosi, police acted on information received about an individual allegedly in possession of explosives in the area.
“Police mobilised and operationalised the information. Macheque, together with two males, was spotted near Buhleni Sports Ground. They were approached and searched, and she was found in possession of explosive detonator cords and connector caps,” said Nkosi.
He added that Macheque was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
During processing, it was further discovered that she was in the country illegally, leading to an additional charge in line with the Immigration Act.
The two males who were with her at the time of the arrest have not been linked to the possession of the explosives, and no further details about them were immediately available.
Macheque appeared before the Mozambican national,Court on Monday, April 4, where the case was postponed to June 3 for further investigation. She remains in custody.
Police have not yet disclosed the intended use of the explosives, and investigations are ongoing.
Nkosi have reiterated the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, which they say plays a crucial role in preventing crime and ensuring public safety.
