Gert Sibande TVET College welcomed members of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education for an oversight visit on August 03, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to accountability, quality education and skills development.
The parliamentary delegation, led by Portfolio Committee Chairperson Hon. Tebogo Letsie, was received by the College Council, Executive Management, staff, the Student Representative Council (SRC), and labour union representatives.
The oversight visit formed part of Parliament’s constitutional responsibility to monitor and evaluate the performance of public institutions, ensuring sound governance, accountability and the effective delivery of higher education and training.
During the engagement, committee members held discussions with the college leadership on several key areas, including governance, institutional management, academic programmes, infrastructure, student support services, financial sustainability, and the college’s role in advancing skills development across the Gert Sibande District and beyond.
The visit also included a walkabout of the College’s Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre, where committee members toured the facilities and gained first-hand insight into the practical training environment. The delegation observed the college’s artisan development initiatives and the various technical and vocational skills programmes designed to prepare students for employment and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
The oversight visit highlighted the important role that Gert Sibande TVET College continues to play in producing skilled graduates and supporting South Africa’s broader skills development agenda while ensuring that public institutions remain accountable and responsive to the needs of students and communities.
