South African nature lovers, families and communities will once again have the opportunity to explore some of the country’s most spectacular protected areas when the 21st annual SA National Parks Week takes place from September 7 to 13.

The annual initiative, led by SANParks, provides South African day visitors with free access to participating national parks during the designated week. The campaign aims to encourage citizens to experience the country’s rich natural heritage while promoting greater public awareness of the importance of conservation.

However, visitors planning to visit Kruger National Park, West Coast National Park or Augrabies Falls National Park should take note that free access at these parks will only be available from September  7 to 11 and will not extend to the weekend.

Namaqua National Park, the Boulders Penguin Colony Section of Table Mountain National Park, and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway are not included in the free-access initiative.

The campaign opens the gates of participating parks to South African day visitors at no charge, providing an opportunity for families, communities, schools, nature enthusiasts and first-time visitors to experience the country’s diverse wildlife, landscapes and conservation areas.

To qualify for free entry, South African visitors must present their identity documents at the relevant park entrance. Children under the age of 18 will not be required to provide identification.

While entry is free during the initiative, visitors should be aware that the offer does not include accommodation, guided activities, game drives or other tourism activities. These services will continue to be charged at their normal rates.

SANParks has also cautioned that individual parks may have different entry conditions and visitor limits. Members of the public are therefore encouraged to check the applicable dates and requirements for their preferred park before travelling.

More information about the participating parks, dates and conditions is available on the SANParks SA National Parks Week 2026 information page: SANParks SA National Parks Week 2026
