The town’s SAPS conducted an awareness campaign on substance abuse at Sobhuza Primary School in Carolina on February 26.
The campaign was led by the School Safety Coordinator, CPO Sergeant Thabang Mokwana, with provincial department stakeholders and CPF.
The campaign targeted Grade 4 to grade 7 learners with the aim of teaching learners from an early age not use or sell drugs.
“We have noticed that some of the young learners are already starting to engage in substance abuse and that needs to be prevented. We targeted this primary school as this is where learners are already using drugs.
If we can manage to stop them at a young age, we are going to have a safer and progressive community. Some of the crimes that are committed in our area are influenced by substance abuse,” he said.
Mokwana also invited two parolees who now act as Ambassadors for the Department of Correctional Service. They told learners how hard life is behind bars and living with a criminal record and the stigma of having been in jail.
