Newly appointed Minister of Social Development Dina Pule has assured millions of South Africans who rely on social grants that their monthly payments will continue uninterrupted despite the ongoing migration from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) gold card to the Postbank black card.
Pule said beneficiaries should not be concerned about the card replacement process, stressing that it would not affect their grant payments.
“I want to assure SASSA beneficiaries that they will continue to receive their grants on time. All they need to do is change from the gold card to the black card, but this will never affect their grants,” she said.
She explained that the Department of Social Development, SASSA, Postbank and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies are working together to ensure a smooth transition.
According to Pule, beneficiaries who receive grants through Postbank or commercial banks will continue to have their money deposited directly into their chosen accounts each month.
She added that the new payment system will reduce logistical challenges associated with transporting cash to payment points, while biometric verification measures will strengthen the security and integrity of the grant payment system.
Outlining her priorities for the first 100 days in office, Pule said she would focus on implementing the department’s strategic plan, improving internal systems, tackling substance abuse and strengthening efforts to protect children from trafficking and exploitation.
The minister said the Department of Social Development manages an annual budget of about R300 billion and provides social assistance to approximately 28 million South Africans.
“Our responsibility is to improve the lives of vulnerable South Africans and ensure they receive the support they need,” she said.
Pule added that integrity, accountability, teamwork and effective communication would guide her leadership as the department works to improve services for vulnerable communities.
