In a powerful display of community initiative, two significant sporting tournaments, the Silulusamandzi and the Phakama Mfazi Cups, are making waves across the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

It serves as vital platforms for awareness campaigns and youth support; addressing pressing social challenges within the community.

Silulusamandzi Cup: Kicking Against Unemployment and Drug Abuse.

The Silulusamandzi Cup, a football tournament featuring 32 teams, was organized to confront the alarming rates of youth unemployment and drug abuse across the CALM. Recognizing the devastating impact these issues have on young lives, the tournament provides a constructive outlet and a sense of purpose.

According to the organizing committee, bringing young people together through sport, the Silulusamandzi Cup aims to foster camaraderie, discipline and a positive environment; offering an alternative to the pitfalls of idleness and substance abuse.

Phakama Mfazi Cup: Netball for Empowerment and Safety

Running concurrently with the soccer cup, the Phakama Mfazi Cup is a netball tournament involving 16 teams; specifically designed to address critical issues affecting young women and children. The tournament’s objectives are to highlight awareness and support regarding the high rate of teenage pregnancy, crime and the escalating rate of woman and children abuse within households.

The name “Phakama Mfazi,” translates to “Rise Woman.” This encapsulates the spirit of empowerment and resilience the tournament seeks to bring about. It’s a call to action against gender-based violence and a beacon of hope for young girls and women facing societal pressures and dangers.

These tournaments are the result of a dedicated and passionate eight-member organizing committee, co-led by Innocent Zulu from Tjakastad and Skhumbuzo.
