Young pharmacist fatally shot at Mooiplaas tavern

A 33-year-old was arrested for fatally shooting a young pharmacist at a Mooiplaas tavern on Sunday March 01.

The spokesperson for Elukwatini police station, Sergeant Wiseman Nkosi, said they received information that there has been a shooting at the Fire Tavern in Mooiplaas.

The suspected shooter Andries Matsebula, traveling in a white BMW sedan was intercepted by police on the way to Nhlazatshe Crossing. A legally registered 9mm was found in the car and the man was taken in for questioning.

Other Police members went to Embhuleni Hospital where the unconscious victim was found with a gunshot wound to his forehead. Nkosi added that he was identified as Mboneni Simon Tshabalala (34), a pharmacist from Hendrina, where he ran his own private pharmacy.

“The victim was previously suspected by the community of peddling drugs, using local youth and being involved in other criminal activities, but nothing was concretely proved so far,” he stated.

Police also started a preliminary investigation at the scene of the shooting. Matsebula was then arrested and detained after being questioned. He appeared in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate Court on Monday March 03 but the matter was postponed to March 10 for formal bail application.
