A routine journey through the Lebombo border turned into a race against time on Tuesday morning when a Mozambican traveler went into labor, forcing border officials to swap their security duties for life-saving midwifery.

Marluz Albino Tovela, a Mozambican traveler, was en route to Inhambane when she realised her journey would be interrupted by an unexpected arrival.

As she reached the Lebombo Port of Entry, it became clear that her unborn son was not going to wait for the end of the trip.

Trading badges for Midwifery

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the “Buzaphi Team” stationed at the border quickly identified the medical emergency.

With no time to reach a hospital, three officials stepped forward to facilitate the delivery, momentarily setting aside their law enforcement and customs duties to act as a makeshift medical team.

Working together in a makeshift delivery area, the team provided both the physical assistance and emotional support required for the high-stakes situation. At 07:55 the tension of the border crossing was broken by the cries of a healthy baby boy.

‘Baby SAPS and Customs’

The newborn was quickly and affectionately nicknamed “Baby SAPS and Customs” by the staff on-site a nod to the inter-departmental cooperation that ensured his safe arrival.

Following the birth, mother and child were met by an emergency medical services team and transported to Tonga Hospital for further observation and postnatal care. Both are reported to be in good health.

A Different Kind of Milestone

The Lebombo Border Post is one of the busiest in the region, processing thousands of travelers daily during the festive season.

However, for the officials on duty this Tuesday, the day will be remembered not for the long queues or the customs declarations, but for the tiny traveler who decided the border line was the perfect place to start his life’s journey.
