The Executive Mayor of the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM), Cllr Mbuso Magubane, visited several schools within the municipality as part of its Winter School Support Initiative.

This forms part of CALM’s ongoing efforts to support education and improve learning conditions across disadvantaged communities. With the winter season already underway, he prioritized the donation of school shoes.

This would ensure learners are warm and comfortable, enabling them to concentrate on their schoolwork. He also donated a printer to one of the schools to support administrative and learning needs. The schools which benefited from the donations include Hloniphani Primary School (Dundonald), Ligugu High School (Dundonald) and Brook Primary School.

Some schools raised concerns regarding additional infrastructure such as furniture and fencing. The Mayor assured stakeholders he would engage with his counterparts in the provincial and national governments to assist.

During his visit, Cllr Magubane delivered a strong message to learners, particularly female students, urging them to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. He cautioned girls not to enter vehicles driven by unknown individuals. He highlighted the increasing number of violent incidents against women in society.

“We live in difficult times where women and girls are often victims of violence. I urge all our young girls to be careful and never accept lifts from strangers,” he warned.

On behalf of CALM, he reiterated their commitment to improve education and learner safety. He assured them the municipality would continue working with local schools to meet their most pressing needs.
