A joint law enforcement operation has led to the interception of a significant consignment of illicit drugs and goods at the Oshoek Port of Entry, marking another success in the fight against cross-border crime.
The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Michael Masiapato, has commended officials from the BMA, the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their coordinated efforts during the operation.
Masiapato, said the interception took place on March 16 at approximately 20:00, when a truck travelling from eSwatini into South Africa was stopped at the Oshoek Port of Entry. The operation formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and combat the illegal movement of goods.

“During a thorough search of the vehicle, officials discovered 50 bags of dagga concealed in the trailer. The drugs weighed approximately 671.5 kilograms and have an estimated street value of R2.8 million. In addition, authorities uncovered 916 illicit tyres hidden within the same consignment. The driver of the truck fled the scene during the interception and remains at large. Law enforcement agencies have since launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend the suspect,” he said
Masiapato, added that all confiscated items, including the dagga and illicit tyres, were registered with SAPS for evidentiary purposes, while SARS seized the truck as part of ongoing investigations.
A criminal case has been officially opened.

Commissioner Masiapato reaffirmed the Port Management Committee’s commitment to tightening border controls and preventing the smuggling of illegal goods. He highlighted the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in dismantling criminal networks and protecting the country’s borders.
Authorities have indicated that operations of this nature will continue to be intensified, as law enforcement agencies work together to ensure that those involved in illicit activities are brought to justice.
