The Ehlanzeni Anti-Hijacking Team successfully intercepted a massive consignment of counterfeit goods on the evening on March 20.

According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the operation resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the removal of millions of rands worth of illicit merchandise from the streets.

“The breakthrough began when team members received a high-priority tip-off regarding a suspicious truck traveling from the Mozambique border toward Mbombela. The report alleged that the vehicle was being used to smuggle a large quantity of counterfeit merchandise into the South African market,” she said

Nonyane-Mpe, added the specialised unit deployed to the N4 route, conducting strategic patrols to intercept the vehicle before it could reach its destination.

“At approximately 23:30, officers spotted a truck matching the description provided by the intelligence source. Utilising tactical operations, the team safely brought the vehicle to a halt. Upon conducting a thorough search of the cargo area, the officers discovered,” she said

Nonyane-Mpe also said about 30 large boxes filled with premium sneakers. The footwear appeared to be high-quality imitations of a well-known international brand. The total estimated street value of the recovered goods is a staggering R2.4 million.

“This seizure highlights the vigilance of our specialized units in disrupting the flow of illicit goods that undermine our local economy. A representative noted during the processing of the exhibits,”

The occupants of the truck the 39-year-old driver and his 40-year-old crew member were immediately taken into custody. Both have been charged with the possession of illicit and counterfeit goods.

The suspects are currently being held and are expected to make their first appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
