The number of people who died at the shootout in Pinaar has increased from six to eight.

The shootout took place this morning, Saturday, January 11, at Dludlu Tavern in Pinaar outside Mbombela, at about 04:00.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, six people were fatally shot at the scene: one female and five males, whilst two other victims, male and female, succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Three other victims, two males and a female, are still receiving medical treatment after sustaining some injuries during the incident.

“Two VW Polos were also found at the scene with bullet holes, and one of the victims was found dead inside one of the vehicles. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown at this stage, and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.  There is a team of experts in the investigation field that has been assembled to investigate this incident. A 72-hour plan has been activated subsequent to the incident,” said Ndubane.

He also said no one has been arrested so far, and police are still in pursuit of the perpetrators. Anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the suspects is urged to call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or send information via the My SAPS app.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security,Jacky Macie,aison, Jacky  Macie’ has reactedto the killing of eight people in Pienaar. He said

He said, “We condemn this barbaric and senseless loss of lives in the strongest possible terms. We are once more appealing that the police be given space and time to get to the bottom of the shootings. The perpetrators must be urgently arrested.”

Macie also said they are imploring on all members of the public who may have information to come forward and assist the police. This incident yet agan brings into sharp focus the challenges posed by gun violence in this country.

“We are again calling on liquor traders to always prioritise the safety of their patrons. We further extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and we also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.”
