A fire broke out at a storage warehouse in Skukuza, Kruger National Park (KNP), during the late hours of Saturday, July 18, destroying critical maintenance infrastructure and equipment.
According to KNP General Manager for Communications, Rey Thakhuli, the warehouse is located a considerable distance from all tourism accommodation and administrative offices.
“As such, there was no immediate risk to guests or core operational facilities, and no injuries have been reported,” Thakhuli said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and a full investigation has been launched. Emergency response and technical teams are currently on site to secure the area and assess the full extent of the damage.
The warehouse contained critical infrastructure components used for the park’s maintenance operations, including spare generators, geysers, large quantities of electrical cabling and other essential maintenance equipment.
Thakhuli said the destruction of these assets could have a short-term impact on certain maintenance activities within the park.
“SANParks is committed to restoring affected operations as swiftly as possible and will provide further updates as verified information becomes available,” he said.
Despite the damage, SANParks has assured visitors that tourism activities and accommodation facilities remain unaffected, with no threat posed to guests or the park’s core operations.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
