The Gert Sibande District’s (GSDM) Mayor, Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, unveiled a mobile drone operation unit, and aimed at assisting the GSDM with providing a variety of drone services across the District.
Mgomezulu said the GSDM is known for its innovative way of doing things outside the normal or ordinary municipal way. “This is no different.
It is the only one of its kind, a specially customised unit for GSDM’s operational requirements and geography. The vehicle itself boasts a specially imported raised suspension, making it suitable for travelling any terrain across the District,” he explained.
Over and above, the unit’s capacity is sufficient to reach anywhere and is capable of spending sustained periods of time in remote areas without electricity, but still able to carry out its mandate. The vehicle is also equipped with sufficient capacity to power all its on-board gadgets with electricity for up to eight (8) hours without running the engine. All office equipment is mounted on the vehicle to facilitate mobile operations. This includes a safety feature of 360 degree camera,” he said.
The mobile office will allow the drone unit to render services such as agricultural crop spraying for small farmers, mapping services for municipalities, as well as disaster and air quality monitoring across the District.
