Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) hosted its highly successful 3-in-1 Marathon on May 17 in Ermelo.

Since last staged in 2019, it drew over 700 runners from across South Africa and neighbouring countries. New champions were crowned and Ermelo’s streets became a vibrant celebration of fitness, endurance and unity. Every finisher received a commemorative T-shirt and medal. Podium winners shared substantial prize money across the 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 10 km categories.

Top honours went to Mbuti Mollo of MaXed (KZN) and Segwana Tladi of Bellas (Mpumalanga), the respective winners of the men’s and women’s titles. Each received R5000. Simon Sibeko (MaXed Elid) claimed the half marathon men’s open crown, with rising star, Thembinkosi Mavuso, bagging the junior men’s title. Naledi Mazibuko (Top Runners) made a clean sweep of the women’s open and junior divisions.

In the 10 km race, Samkelo Ngobese (Bella) sprinted to victory in the men’s open category while Music Tshela (Top Runners) triumphed in the junior men’s section. Double-winner, Tshepang Mazibuko, (Top Runners) dominated the female open and junior fields.

GSDM’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, praised the athletes, local communities and partners. “This marathon showcases the power of sport to unite communities and spark economic activity. Together we have revived a signature event benefitting our people’s health and our region’s growth,” he said. The mayor also thanked the sponsors, volunteers, municipal staff, local businesses and public-safety teams who ensured a safe and successful race day.

“We also wish to acknowledge the patience and cooperation of road users affected by temporary closures along the route. The Municipality remains committed to harnessing sport as a catalyst for sustainable development and looks forward to an even bigger Gert Sibande 3-in-1 Marathon in 2026,” Mngomezulu concluded.
