The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) have alerted the communities of Malahleka and Tjakastad area to be on the lookout for a leopard which has escaped from Nkomazi Game Reserve on or about the May 06.

As soon as MTPA received a complaint on Monday of an escaped leopard that that killed a goat, it immediately dispatched its team from Songimvelo Nature Reserve to deal with the incident, unfortunately without any success. A cage as a trap was set for two consecutive days, also without any success. The MTPA has been on site since Monday trying to catch the dangerous animal.

On Tuesday, the Nkomazi Game Reserve made a helicopter available to search the area for 2 hours, but the leopard managed to evade the team. The MTPA is continuing its search team in the area where it was last seen to continue with the operation and working together with a specialized dog unit to search.

The community is strongly advised not to try to capture the leopard on their own and to avoid walking in the mountains at night until the leopard is found. If the leopard is seen, the community is advised to urgently contact Nomcebo Kunene from MTPA on 072 661 6718.
