A 40-year-old man has been arrested for murder after handing himself over for allegedly killing his girlfriend and leading police to the location of her body in Machadodorp.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, on Tuesday, March 10, at approximately 05:30, the suspect arrived at the Machadodorp Police Station and reported that he had killed his girlfriend.

“Police members questioned the suspect about the whereabouts of the victim’s body. He informed them that he had left the body in the veld but had been returning to the location daily to check on it. The suspect further indicated that he was willing to take police to the scene,” said Nonyane-Mpe.

“Our members subsequently accompanied the suspect to a certain farm, where he pointed out the body of a female believed to be the victim. The body was found lying on the ground, uncovered and facing upwards, still clothed in blue jeans and a khaki T-shirt, without shoes.”

She added that approximately 20 metres from the body, police also discovered a shallow grave, which is believed to have been dug with the intention of burying the deceased.

“The suspect alleged that he killed the victim on the farm. He was immediately placed under arrest for murder. Further investigations led police to the suspect’s residence in Emthonjeni, Machadodorp, where blood-stained clothing belonging to the suspect was discovered and seized,” Nonyane-Mpe explained.

According to the report, the incident occurred on Saturday, March 7, at about 16:00, following an argument between the couple.

The suspect appeared at the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, March 11, facing a charge of murder. The court outcome is currently unknown at this stage.
