Authorities in Mpumalanga have sent a clear message to motorists this festive season: drinking and driving will not be tolerated.

As part of a rigorous provincial road-safety initiative known as the Alcohol Project, law enforcement has ramped up operations across several key regions to curb the rising threat of intoxicated drivers.

Wide-scale enforcement operations

The operations, which aim to reduce preventable road fatalities, were conducted across a broad range of areas, including:
• Standerton
• eMkhondo
• KwaMhlanga
• Tweefontein
• Emalahleni

Between December 01, 20, 2025, approximately 88 drivers were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

The crackdown intensified significantly over the most recent weekend, which saw 60 of those arrests take place, primarily concentrated in the Nkangala Region.

Legal consequences and Court appearances

The justice system is moving quickly to address these offenses. Several suspects from the earlier part of the month have already made appearances in various magistrates’ courts.

For those detained during the high-volume weekend operations, court appearances are expected to commence this Monday December 22.

A Stern warning from provincial leadership

Mpumalanga MEC for Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has praised the diligence of traffic law enforcement officers while issuing a somber reminder to the public.

“Alcohol and the steering wheel are a deadly combination that has caused preventable road crashes. We again appeal to motorists to desist from drinking and driving,” Macie said.

The MEC also placed responsibility on the public, urging passengers to take a stand for their own safety.

He emphasized that passengers should never agree to be driven by someone who is intoxicated and should instead report such incidents to the police to prevent potential tragedies.

As the festive season reaches its peak, MEC Macie has called on law enforcement agencies to maintain their current momentum.

The goal is to ensure the swift finalization of cases and to keep the roads clear of impaired drivers during the busiest travel periods of the year.
