The Mpumalanga Provincial Women’s Day celebration on Friday August 9, held at Fernie as part of commemorating 68 years since the historic 1956 women’s march
This year’s event, themed “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development,” served as a powerful reminder of the strides made by women in various sectors over the past three decades.
The acting Premier of Mpumalanga, Honourable Fidel Mlombo, who also serves as the MEC of the Department of Culture, Sport, and Recreation, delivered the keynote speech. He reflected on the achievements of women since the 1956 march, noting that the dreams of those women have become a reality.

“Today, we see more women in management positions, in mining, in politics, and in cabinets. What those women fought for is now our reality. This Women’s Day celebration not only honoured the past but also looked forward to a future where women continue to break barriers and lead in all spheres of life. Women must take advantage of government empowerment programme and participate in the economic activities to fight against poverty,” he said.
Mlombo, also condemn gender-based violence, urging society to adopt better behaviours and to protect women and children. He urged communities to work with the law enforcement to fight GBV.
The event was graced by women leaders from various sectors, including business, agriculture, and construction. These women shared their stories, offering motivation and encouragement to others. They emphasized that with passion and a clear vision, women can achieve great success.
The hosting mayor of Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality, Mbuso Magabane, said it was an honour in hosting such an event. He emphasized the invaluable contributions women make to society, highlighting the critical roles they play in nurturing and developing communities.
In a heart-warming gesture, the Gift of the Givers organization contributed to the celebration by donating food parcels to elderly women, further underscoring the spirit of generosity and community that marked the day.
