Mpumalanga MEC for Finance, Bonakele Majuba.
Mpumalanga MEC for Finance, Bonakele Majuba, has tabled a R729.185 million budget for the Provincial Treasury for the 2026/27 financial year, emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline, accountability and improved service delivery across the province.
Presenting the budget, Majuba outlined allocations across the department’s key programmes.
Administration received R183.968 million
Sustainable Resource Management programme was allocated R93.031 million to oversee budget implementation and provide support to local government.
The Assets and Liabilities Management branch received the largest share of the budget at R409.731 million.
The allocation will be used to monitor transformative procurement targets, provide information technology support and advance systems modernisation within government.
A further R42.455 million was allocated to Financial Governance to strengthen regulatory compliance, financial reporting and support to public sector institutions.
Majuba stressed that budget allocations alone cannot guarantee progress.
“Honourable Speaker and Members, the budget allocations mentioned in this address cannot, on their own, sufficiently inspire confidence in the state. They can only become meaningful when translated into tangible service delivery and matched by fiscal discipline and accountability,” he said.
The MEC also highlighted efforts to tackle youth unemployment through skills development. During the year, the Provincial Treasury enrolled 71 young graduates in its internship programme to prepare them for careers in finance and information and communication technology (ICT).
“We will continue to explore partnerships with Sector Education and Training Authorities and key players in the finance and ICT sectors to expand investment in the professional development and career pathways for young people in our Province,” said Majuba.
As of March 2026, Mpumalanga had collected R4.7 billion in own revenue, driven largely by motor vehicle licensing fees, gambling taxes and related levies. The Provincial Treasury plans to continue supporting departments and public entities to improve revenue collection while assisting them in leveraging the Budget Facility for Infrastructure to develop strategic projects that stimulate economic growth.
Majuba also committed the department to strengthening municipal finances, improving asset management, enhancing cybersecurity measures and providing targeted support to municipalities facing financial challenges. He said viable and well-managed municipalities remain essential for effective governance, sustainable development and improved service delivery throughout Mpumalanga.
