The Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Makhosazane Masilela, has tables a budget allocation of R584.460 million for the 2026/27 financial year, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to strengthening democracy, accountability and effective governance across the province.
Presenting the Legislature’s budget on June 18, Masilela said the allocation would enable the institution to fulfill its constitutional mandate while improving service delivery, oversight and public participation.
The budget is allocated to two programmes and a direct charge against the Provincial Revenue Fund.
Programme 1: Administration has been allocated R245.245 million
Programme 2: Parliamentary Business receives R278.180 million.
A further R61.035 million has been allocated as a direct charge against the Provincial Revenue Fund.
“This budget represents more than financial allocations; it represents our commitment to strengthening democracy, improving governance, and serving the people of Mpumalanga with integrity and accountability,” said Masilela.
She said the Legislature remains focused on building an institution that is responsive, accountable and effective in serving the people of Mpumalanga. Following an intensive strategic planning process, seven strategic priority areas have been identified to guide the Legislature’s work over the coming years. These priorities are aligned with the Legislative Sector Programme and the national Medium-Term Development Plan.
Masilela highlighted the important role played by parliamentary committees in ensuring meaningful oversight and holding the executive accountable. During the 2025/26 financial year, committees carried out oversight through meetings, consideration and approval of departmental budgets and annual performance plans, as well as monitoring service delivery and government performance.
The Legislature will also continue investing in the welfare and development of Members of the Provincial Legislature through capacity-building initiatives. These include short- and long-term learning opportunities aimed at improving efficiency, enhancing leadership skills and adapting to new technologies.
Public participation remains a cornerstone of the Legislature’s work. Masilela said the 7th Legislature plans to strengthen community involvement by reviewing public engagement schedules, including afternoon and weekend meetings to accommodate working residents.
She further emphasized the need to expand outreach programmes to rural and marginalised communities while strengthening feedback mechanisms to ensure that issues raised by citizens are addressed and government commitments are effectively monitored.
