The Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements has noted with concern the re-emergence and continuous fraudulent housing scam targeting members of community.

According to the Human Settlements Acting Head of department, Hazel Zitha, the public is seriously cautioned to be vigilant as scammers continue to prey on unsuspecting government subsidy beneficiaries. Swindle social media accounts have been peddling false information on access housing subsidies from the government.

She also said the scammers are now targeting middle-income earners who qualify for the First-Home-Finance programme. This programme is a free government service available to middle income earners.

“The department does not require any payment or facilitation fee from applicants at any stage of the application process. Anyone who requires assistance with accessing the programme must visit the nearest municipal offices or the Department of Human Settlements Offices at the three regions,” said Zitha

She explained warning signs which the public needs to be aware of. “Be wary of unexpected calls, emails or messages from individuals claiming to be from the department. Any demand for payment to process your application or expedite the approval process is a clear indication of a scam,” explained Zitha.

She also mentioned that scammers might promise guaranteed approval or quicker processing in exchange for money.

She further alluded that for beneficiaries to protect themselves they must always verify the authenticity of any communication from the department contacting our offices directly.

“Avoid sharing of personal information or financial information with anyone claiming to represent the department without proper verification. If you encounter any suspicious activity or scam, immediately report to the local authorities,” advised Zitha.

She further said the department is committed to ensuring that all eligible citizens have access to housing subsidies they are entitled to, without falling victim to fraud.

“In the past, similar cases were successfully tackled through the department’s Rental Housing Tribunal, Legal and Security Management Services. In worse case scenarios, the country’s law enforcement agencies such as the police are being involved to crack such unfortunate fraudulent cases,” said Zitha

She concluded that the department urges the public to remain vigilant and to protect themselves from these deceptive schemes.
