Sboniso Mathebula from Mayflower Secondary School earned a perfect score of 300 out of 300, achieving an impressive 100% pass rate in mathematics in 2024 Matric Exams. This confirms his resilience, determination and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
According to the provincial MEC for the Department of Education Cathy Dlamini, this achievement is even greater as he lost both his parents. “Rather than allowing this devastating tragedy to define him, Sboniso chose to channel his grief into motivation, working relentlessly to honour their memory and make them proud,” she said.
Dlamini said his greatest inspiration comes from his grandmother, a woman of outstanding strength and resilience, who overcame her own personal hardships. Her perseverance taught him the value of hard work and determination and values that guided him throughout his academic career.
“Sboniso’s story serves as a powerful reminder to never give up, no matter how tough life gets. It is going to be tough and when you feel like giving up, remember why you started. Be the change you want to see in the world,” she said.
His drive to create a positive impact through both his actions and achievements continues to fuel his ambition and success. Mathebula is not just a math genius; he is a symbol of strength and the unyielding power of purpose.
In response Mathebula said “Determination and dedication was my moto. I had to put all my effort in to make sure that I pass so that is easy for me to go to the higher education and also get bursaries. The main thing was to honour my late parents. My advice to fellow learners who will be sitting for their exam this year; they must start now to prepare themselves for the day that they will sit. If they fail now to focus they will not make it.”
