The Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), showcased significant progress across various sectors during its State of the District Address (SoDA), delivered by Executive Mayor Cllr Walter Mngomezulu on June 24. The address, fittingly held during Youth Month, emphasized the municipality’s commitment to empowering its residents and fostering economic growth.
A key focus of Mayor Mngomezulu’s address was the strides made in youth empowerment. He highlighted initiatives aimed at ensuring young people are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the economy, underscoring the municipality’s dedication to nurturing future generations.
The GSDM also celebrated impressive achievements in municipal performance. Msukaligwa Local Municipality was recognized as the Overall Best Municipality in 2024 with a remarkable 92.8% performance.
Furthermore, all local municipalities within the GSDM achieved performance ratings of no less than 80%, a testament to effective governance. The district has actively supported these local municipalities in maintaining unqualified audits, demonstrating a commitment to financial accountability.
Mayor Mngomezulu provided an update on the successful adoption of the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and the 2025/26 budget. He presented a rundown of various successful projects undertaken throughout 2024. Cultural events, vital for promoting unity and stimulating economic opportunities, have been successfully revived and supported, enriching the community’s social fabric.
The health sector in GSDM has made commendable strides in the fight against HIV, TB, STIs, and Gender-Based Violence. This progress reflects a dedicated effort to improve public health outcomes. Service delivery, communal and social services, with a particular emphasis on female empowerment and elderly care, were also highlighted as high priorities on the municipality’s agenda.
The GSDM has played a crucial role in bulk infrastructure development, maintenance support and water quality testing. Several critical projects have been implemented, with millions invested in maintenance and specialized programs designed to train graduates in electrical, civil and building disciplines, fostering local expertise and job creation.
With regards to economic development and innovation, the municipality has undertaken several key initiatives, implemented various programmes and hosted summits, all aimed at driving inclusive economic growth and job creation. To bolster tourism, key events received support and safety campaigns were launched. Furthermore, the GSDM has forged meaningful partnerships with the Mining Sector, recognizing its importance in the regional economy.
In his concluding remarks, Mayor Mngomezulu reaffirmed the GSDM’s unwavering commitment to the principles of the District Development Model (DDM). This commitment is aimed at achieving the IDP goals, including critical initiatives related to disaster preparedness and climate resilience, ensuring a sustainable future for the district.
