A man who was assaulted by police.
An investigation is underway following an incident in which a South African Police Service (SAPS) constable allegedly assaulted a member of the public.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the incident, which has been widely circulated through videos on social media platforms, reportedly took place on April 02 at the Volksrust Police Station.
“In response to the serious allegations, SAPS has initiated an internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have also confirmed that a criminal case has been opened to ensure a comprehensive and transparent process,”
“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation. The involvement of IPID underscores SAPS’s commitment to accountability and transparency in handling complaints against its members,” Mdhluli said.
he added that police reiterated its stance on professionalism, emphasising that all officers are bound by a strict Code of Conduct that governs their behavior while on duty.
Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the organisation takes such allegations seriously. “The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” he stated.
