Petrus Janse van Rensburg.
A young man who posted videos of himself allegedly driving recklessly inside the Kruger National Park has publicly apologised following widespread backlash on social media. He has since being indentified as Petrus Janse van Rensburg.
The videos, which circulated online, allegedly showed the man speeding through rivers, driving on restricted-access roads and ignoring road closures inside the protected conservation area.
In an apology video shared online, the man said he has deep respect for SANParks and the work the organisation does.
“I fully understand why what I did created reaction, and I take all of your concerns very seriously. From here on out, everything I do in the national parks will reflect the respect they deserve,” he said.
However, SANParks said the apology came too late and confirmed that serious action would be taken against the individual.
SANParks general manager for communications Rey Thakhuli said the organisation views the matter in a serious light.
“We have seen the apology, which is a little too late. His actions will be met with serious consequences to deter similar behaviour. This will also teach a lesson to be more responsible,” said Thakhuli.
According to SANParks, the videos show behaviour that endangered public safety, violated conservation regulations and disrespected park management authority.
“Such behaviour demonstrates a blatant disregard for conservation regulations, public safety, environmental protection measures and the authority of park management. The organisation wishes to make it plainly clear that conduct of this nature will not be tolerated and will be dealt with with the seriousness it deserves,” Thakhuli added.
The man could face fines and may potentially be banned from entering all SANParks-managed parks and conservation areas, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
SANParks also confirmed that it is investigating another video allegedly showing one of the park’s guards asking the driver to test the vehicle because she wanted to hear the sound of the car. Management said the matter is receiving attention internally.
