Field rangers and Anti-Poaching Unit members were celebrated during the World Rangers Day 2026 commemoration at Songimvelo Nature Reserve on July 31 for their courage and dedication in protecting South Africa’s wildlife and biodiversity.
The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from the environmental sector, law enforcement agencies, landowners, church leaders, the Executive Mayors of the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality and the Gert Sibande District Municipality, as well as members of the local community.
Delivering the keynote address, Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, Khethiwe Moeketsi, praised the resilience, courage and selfless service of field rangers and members of the Anti-Poaching Unit. She acknowledged the growing threat posed by organised wildlife crime and commended rangers for risking their lives daily to safeguard South Africa’s rich biodiversity.
MEC Moeketsi encouraged the frontline conservation officers to remain steadfast in their mission, emphasising that their dedication ensures future generations will continue to experience wildlife in its natural habitat rather than only through books and photographs.
As part of the celebrations, rangers received tokens of appreciation in recognition of their commitment and outstanding service. Two nature reserves were also presented with operational vehicles to strengthen conservation and anti-poaching efforts across the province.
The programme featured impressive ranger drill demonstrations and vibrant cultural performances, highlighting the discipline, professionalism and pride of those entrusted with protecting the country’s natural heritage.
One of the most emotional moments of the event was a tribute to the late Mr Masinga, a former chief ranger who lost his life while protecting wildlife from poachers. His family received a financial contribution of R50,000 in honour of his dedication and ultimate sacrifice. He was remembered as a committed conservationist whose legacy continues to inspire fellow rangers.
