A 25-year-old man has been rearrested after allegedly assaulting and repeatedly raping a 77-year-old woman for two days at her house in Dikweteng village in Dientjie, located near Matibidi. The matter was reported to the police on Wednesday, July 3.

The man was previously arrested about three months ago and faced charges of rape, an assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and burglary when an 83-year-old woman was stabbed and raped in Didimala village in Dientjie in March.

A Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, said the man faces similar charges yet again and is expected to appear in the District Periodical Court on Tuesday, July 9.

“It is alleged that the 77-year-old woman managed to summon for assistance on Friday, July 5. The suspect allegedly escaped before community members responded to the call. The incident was immediately reported to police, who immediately instituted an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect in Ohrigstad on Sunday, July 7,” Nkosi said.

He said preliminary investigation indicated the incident of the 83-year-old victim.

“The suspect was arrested for that incident and was out on bail of R1 000. The pensioner was admitted to the hospital until she lost her life in May. The latest victim is also recovering in hospital after she sustained some injuries,” Nkosi said.
