A crash on the N4 between Waterval Boven and Ngodwana has claimed the lives of eight Mozambican nationals, prompting renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution on the province’s roads.
The fatal collision occurred on Tuesday, June 16, when a minibus taxi travelling from Mozambique to Gauteng collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.
According to Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, the taxi was carrying 10 occupants at the time of the crash.
“Eight occupants, including the driver, were declared dead at the scene, while two others were transported to hospital for medical treatment,” said Mmusi.
The truck, which was travelling from Gauteng towards Mbombela, had two occupants on board.
Both sustained minor injuries and received medical attention.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, leading to the temporary closure of the N4 as rescue and recovery operations were conducted.
The road has since been reopened to traffic.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collision, and investigations are ongoing.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. We also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery,” said Macie.
He further urged motorists to prioritise road safety, especially during long-distance journeys.
“I encourage drivers to obey traffic regulations, remain alert at all times and stop to rest whenever they feel fatigued,” he said.
Motorists travelling through the area have been advised to proceed with caution as emergency personnel continue clearing the scene.
Schoemanskloof has been suggested as an alternative route for those wishing to avoid possible delays.
The crash marks another tragic loss of life on one of Mpumalanga’s busiest transport corridors and highlights the ongoing need for vigilance on the roads.
