The intensive, week-long search for the missingperson in the Mlondozi River in Ekulindeni area, has ended as authorities confirmed the deceased’s body was located on the banks of the Nkomazi River.
According to the spokesperson for the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality, Thapelo Phetla, the discovery follows an extensive operation covering the complex river systems of the Mlondozi and Nkomazi rivers.
“The individual was found dead and the family has been notified and has identified the deceased,” he said.
The operation was a large-scale undertaking involving a multi-agency team.
For seven days, search crews navigated difficult terrains and river conditions to provide closure for the family.
Key groups included local authorities and SAPS with Mpumalanga’s EMS Airwing providing aerial surveillance.
Volunteer search and rescue groups from the surrounding communities also joined the effort.
The search teams also extended their thanks to the local community for their assistance and support since the start of the operation.
“On behalf of the family and municipality we extend our gratitude to these teams for their relentless efforts throughout the gruelling week-long mission. The team worked tirelessly despite inclement weather conditions,” Phetla said.
He also said while the community processes the news, focus has shifted to supporting those left behind.
“Our deepest condolences and sympathies are extended to the family and friends of the deceased during this time of grief and loss. We are pleading with the public to respect the family’s privacy as they begin the mourning process.”
