The Mpumalanga police continues to tighten the grip on crime as Operation Safer Festive Season swept through the Gert Sibande District this past Friday, January 09.

The targeted operation focused primarily on the Bethal and Carolina policing areas, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of illegal goods.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the success of the operation was driven by a combination of strategic patrols and intelligence-led deployments.

The operation led to a series of significant breakthroughs in the Bethal area:

Two suspects, aged 39 and 43, were apprehended in separate incidents for the possession of illicit cigarettes.

The total street value of the confiscated goods is estimated at approximately R93,000.

During a coordinated stop-and-search at a tavern in the Bethal CBD, police arrested a 41-year-old individual found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A 37-year-old male was taken into custody after he allegedly attempted to bribe police officials with R1,000 in a failed bid to prevent the arrest of an associate.

In a departure from standard criminal seizures, police also confiscated a python from an individual during the operation.

The snake was safely recovered and handed over to the SPCA for specialized care.

All suspects are scheduled to appear before the Bethal Magistrate’s Court soon

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, lauded the officers for their dedication. He emphasized that these coordinated efforts are vital to ensuring public safety and combating the surge of crime often seen during the festive period.
“We encourage members of the public to continue working hand-in-hand with the Police by reporting any suspicious or criminal activities,” said Mkhwanazi.
