The Gert Sibande instalment of the Nelson Mandela Month legacy project took place at the Ntababomvu Primary school in Dundonald in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM) on Tuesday 16.
MEC Cathy Dlamini graced the occasion which was held in partnership with Old Mutual, Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust, the Departments of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, the Department of Correctional Services, Health and Home Affairs as well as the CALM.
All the Departments were offering their core services to the benefit of the school in honour and celebration of Nelson Mandela Month.
The main activities of the day were the painting of classrooms, fixing of leaking roof, ceilings, establishment of a food garden and planting of trees.
Dlamini encouraged the school and the community to work in partnership with the department to ensure the delivery of quality education.
She emphasised the need for working together and to always offer a helping hand to the needy and marginalised.
Her assertion was in line with what Mandela stood for in his fight against poverty and inequality.
“With these campaigns we want to establish a movement and create a powerful ocean wave that will serve as a platform for our traditional leadership, religious leaders, parents, business, NGO’s, our sister departments and civil society to buy into the education enterprise by telling the story of the need to work together as ambassadors for good education delivery and role models for change and good conduct in our education spaces.
That is the vision we have and this is the partnership we are looking for.
This is what education was meant for in the first place, to empower people to solve problems, change and improve their lives on a daily basis,” said Dlamini.
