More than 220 motorists were arrested in Mpumalanga for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs the past weekend
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspects were apprehended during Operation Paseka, which was conducted across the province starting Friday, March 27 and 29.
“As the Easter weekend approaches, the police in Mpumalanga are intensifying law enforcement and crime-combating efforts through Operation Paseka to ensure the safety of the community, particularly road users. The public should expect high-visibility roadblocks and intensified police patrols at shopping malls, transportation hubs, and other areas of interest across all three districts in the province,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, issued a stern warning to motorists who continue to drive under the influence or transport illegal goods.
“I wish to inform the public that we have started Operation Paseka, which is aimed at minimizing road accidents and ensuring the safety of everyone in the province during these Easter holidays. To those who continue to undermine the rule of law, drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or transport illegal goods: know that we are coming for you. We continue to exercise a zero-tolerance approach toward drunk driving. Anyone caught behind the wheel after drinking will be dealt with decisively,” said the General.
