Mbuso Magubane was elected unopposed as the new Executive Mayor of the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM). He was elected at the special council meeting held in Carolina on Tuesday July 16.

His election comes after the resignation of former Executive Mayor Cllr Daniel Nkosi, who now serves at the  provincial legislature as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee for Human Settlements; Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

According to the CALM spokesperson Thapelo Phetla, all parties present welcomed the swearing-in of the new mayor and expressed their best wishes for his tenure. They emphasized the importance of collaborative governance, urging the new Executive Mayor to work inclusively with all political parties, regardless of their affiliations.

In his inaugural address, Cllr Magubane expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him. He extended his appreciation to the organization he represents for the opportunity to lead the people of CALM vowing to serve with honour and dignity.

The Executive Mayor committed to ensuring that all stakeholders have roles in the municipality’s economy, with a particular emphasis on youth leadership. He stressed the importance of equitable service delivery across all wards.

“At the provincial level, Cllr Magubane stands out as one of the youngest Executive Mayors. In the history of CALM, he is the youngest ever elected since the beginning of democracy.
The municipality extends its congratulations to the newly elected Executive Mayor. Previously serving as the Director of Technical Services, Cllr Magubane brings a wealth of experience in service delivery and technical expertise. His qualifications and hands-on experience position him well to serve the public effectively,” said Phetla.

He added that the municipality is looking forward to a progressive era under the Executive Mayor Magubane’s leadership.
