The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) encourages the public to continue using water wisely and sparingly as water levels continue to drop in the listed dams in the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM).
Water levels in the GSDM dam dropped from 90.5% to 89.4%. Members of the public are encouraged to always use water sparingly.
The latest DWS weekly state of reservoirs report of July 15 shows that most of the listed dams in the GSDM recorded declines in water levels with only Jericho Dam recording a slight improvement from 69.5% to 69.7% and Morgenstond Dam remaining unchanged at 84.0%.
The listed dams that recorded declines in water levels include:
- Grootdraai Dam dropping from 87.7% to 86.3%
- Nooitgedacht from 88.0% to 87.4%
- Vygeboom from 100.2% to 100.1%
- Westoe from 55.2% to 53.8%
- Heyshope from 100.5% to 99.0%
DWS weekly report also indicate that the average dam levels in the Mpumalanga recorded a further drop from last week’s 93.7% to 92.9%.
Water levels also dropped in the water management areas (WMA), with the Olifants WMA dropping from 83.9% to 83.3% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA dropping from 94.6% to 93.7%.
DWS also reminds the public that water conservation is key to sustainable water availability as South Africa is a dry and water scarce country where every drop counts as water has no substitute.
DWS further encourages the public to join the Clear Rivers Campaign in celebrating Mandela Month and protect water resources, especially from pollution to ensure sustainable freshwater supply and water security for the current and future generations.
