Mpumalanga police and other law enforcement agencies have intensified operations against drug-related crime, resulting in the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of substantial quantities of illicit drugs across the province.
Between August 19 and September 6, police conducted intelligence-led operations that included roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop-and-searches, high-visibility patrols, tracing operations and searches of identified premises.
The operations resulted in the recovery of:
870.41kg of cannabis (dagga)
12g of crack cocaine
29.021g of crystal meth (tik)
18.160g of nyaope
10 ecstasy tablets
1 unit of Mandrax powder
13 Mandrax tablets
8 units of heroin
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the seizures form part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal drug trade and prevent narcotics from reaching communities, particularly vulnerable young people.
Police urged residents to report suspected drug-related activities through official policing channels, saying community involvement remains crucial in combating crime.
Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended police members and participating stakeholders for their continued efforts.
“The seizure of these drugs and the arrests effected during ongoing operations, including Operation Shanela II, demonstrate our unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of illicit substances,” said Modise.
She said drug abuse fuels other forms of criminality and causes serious social and economic harm to individuals, families and communities.
“We remain resolute in our mission to bring perpetrators to justice and to create safer communities for all residents of Mpumalanga,” Modise said.
