Two foreign nationals, aged 30 and 40, have been arrested after police allegedly found 180 kilograms of dagga worth an estimated R1 million in their possession in Morgenzon.
The suspects were arrested on Thursday, September 10, along the R39 road during a crime-combating operation conducted by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Morgenzon and the Secunda Flying Squad.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, officers spotted a white Volkswagen Golf with Mpumalanga registration plates while conducting the operation.
The vehicle was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of 21 bags containing dagga.
“It was during this time when both suspects were arrested. The weight of the dagga is about 180 kilograms, with an estimated street value of about R1 million,” said Ndubane.
Preliminary investigations established that the two suspects are foreign nationals. Police are working with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to establish their immigration status in South Africa.
The dagga was confiscated and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Standerton Magistrate’s Court in due course, where they will face charges of dealing in dagga.
