Bongani Nkosi (55) from Mayflower in Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM),  received a fully furnished home on October 12 from the Department of Human Settlement.

The newly built house complies with norms and standards for homes delivered for persons with disabilities.

The features, which include handrails and a ramp, will allow Nkosi to have easy mobility in his decent home.
A handful of locals witnessed the occasion led by Gert Sibande District Executive Mayor, Cllr. Walter Mngomezulu, along with CALM Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mbuso. Magubane who stood on behalf of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) MEC, Speed Mashilo.

Nkosi, who has a physical disability was identified by a local structure as a beneficiary deserving to be prioritised. In response, the Department expanded the scope of work on an ongoing project in the locality to include the family. Excited Nkosi exclaimed,

“I thank God for my community who assisted me to get this house. I am so grateful that government has prioritised me, it shows that they do care for people like us acknowledged Nkosi. This intervention is part of government’s efforts to significantly improve people’s living conditions.

Upon handing over the house keys, District Executive Mayor Cllr. Mngomezulu expounded that providing assistance and support to the most vulnerable across communities, particularly for people living disability remains a key priority of government.

“I am so pleased to hand over this well-built house which will meet the primary needs of Nkosi. As government we are working hard to ensure that the most vulnerable in society lived in improved, safer and dignified homes” said Cllr. Mngomezulu. He further committed the District will install a fence for the family to ensure safety.
Cllr. Magubane, thanked the department for the intervention by delivering on its mandates of providing adequate housing. Nkosi’s dignity has been restored by providing him with a decent shelter. I also want to appreciate all stakeholders who played an important role in making sure that Nkosi get his house and fully furnished” cited Cllr. Magubane. He concluded by urging the beneficiary not to sell his house or renting it for financial gain. Nkosi is amongst many families prioritized by government in service delivery.
