The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM) has launched the Mayoral Cup Games at Silobela Sports Ground in Carolina October 19
The Mayoral Cup aims to address social challenges within the community, such as substance abuse, gender-based violence, and femicide, while promoting a healthier lifestyle among young people.
CALM Executive Mayor, Cllr Mbuso Magubane, emphasized the role of sports in preventing youth from becoming victims or perpetrators of social issues. He encouraged the youth to participate in sports to improve their well-being and urged parents to support their children’s involvement.
Cllr Magubane also highlighted plans to include more sporting codes in next year’s games, such as cricket, tennis, and volleyball, to ensure that young people with talents in different sports are recognized.
“No young person should feel left out based on their choice of sport. To motivate participation, the Mayoral Cup Games will offer tokens of appreciation to all teams, with awards for the winning teams. The initiative seeks to promote sports as a serious and positive outlet for young people,” he said
Magubane added that the games will continue until November 23 2024, with the finals set to be held at Elukwatini Stadium.
Teams from various areas will compete, and community members are requested to show their support.
The Executive Mayor extended his best wishes to all teams and emphasized the importance of the games in addressing social issues in the community.
