The agricultural sector in Mpumalanga has received a significant boost as the banking sector expresses commitment to support small scale farmers through the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market (MIFPM). Established by the Provincial Government, the MIFPM aims to export farm produce from Mpumalanga to international markets, benefiting around 150 small scale farmers.
With the construction of the MIFPM complete, the government is now working towards operationalizing the facility before exports can commence. A key player in this initiative is FNB, one of South Africa’s leading banks, which has committed to playing an active role in strengthening the MIFPM ecosystem.
As part of their commitment, FNB is already supporting 141 Early Childhood Development centers in Mpumalanga, in addition to helping entrepreneurs through their Fudaba Programme. This business mentoring initiative aims to provide support and guidance for local entrepreneurs.
To further expedite this initiative, Premier Mandla Ndlovu has emphasized the importance of coordinating an urgent meeting between the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) and the Department of Education (DoE). This meeting will help ensure that the bank’s support can be effectively harnessed for the benefit of Mpumalanga’s citizens.
In a separate development, Premier Ndlovu congratulated Janet Love, the Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), on her new responsibilities, which include overseeing the Mpumalanga province. During their meeting, . Love outlined the IEC’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Local Government elections, accompanied by the IEC’s Mpumalanga management team led by Gugu Langa.
As the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market becomes operational, the region’s small-scale farmers can look forward to improved international market opportunities and a stronger, more sustainable agricultural sector, ensuring no one is left behind.
