A new booklet, unpacking Climate Change, has been launched by the MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, Nompumelelo Hlophe.

Titled “Climate Change – Extending a Helping Hand”, it was launched during commemoration the World Environment Day on June 5 in Delmas.

Produced by the Chief Directorate: Environmental Planning, Policy and Climate Change in the Department, the publication is not a scientific manual, but a practical and relatable guide, designed to educate, engage and empower.

The 83-page publication, available from the Department’s Environmental Empowerment section, emphasises a unique approach – the “Three H’s” Framework. It takes readers on an informative and transformative journey.

The “Three H’s” are:

  • The Head – Learn and understand the science and facts behind climate change.
  • The Heart – Develop a personal and emotional connection to the environment.
  • The Hands – Take meaningful, practical action at home, work and in your community.

“Climate change is no longer a distant concern; it is here; from rising temperatures to erratic rainfall. Mpumalanga, like the rest of the world, is already feeling the effects of climate change.  Alongside these challenges, we came up with this powerful tool to equip and inspire action.  It has been written especially for those on the front lines – environmental practitioners, educators, community leaders, students and active citizens.  This is more than a publication; it is a call to action, an invitation to rise together and support our communities, our ecosystems and our future.  Everyone must join the movement”, said MEC Hlophe.

The Climate Change booklet delves into local and global insights regarding the causes and consequences of climate change.

It also unpacks clear projections for Mpumalanga’s future climate patterns. This includes challenges to agriculture, water and human health.

This booklet is a simple and effective publication calling everyone to take action and educate others. It also is a message of hope, empowerment and shared responsibility, thereby providing knowledge while encouraging action.

Mpumalanga is also vulnerable in the fight against climate change.

As a key agricultural region with diverse communities and ecosystems, the region is already experiencing a rise in average temperatures, unpredictable rainfall and water stress.

All this can negatively affect food security.

Over the past few years, the province took action, taking the lead with a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, Mitigation and Implementation Strategy and a Just Transition Strategy.

This is to ensure an inclusive and equitable shift to a low-carbon economy.

These strategies a part of a roadmap to build resilience, protect livelihoods and safeguard future generations.
