The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM) has launched the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) at the Elukwatini Disaster Centre in response to the growing moral societal decay.

According to CALM’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Mbuso Magubane, the MRM aims to address the rise in anti-social behaviour, particularly among the youth and promote ethical values and traditional practices to foster social cohesion. “The initiative seeks to involve community members and leaders in meaningful discussions and educational programmes to reinforce moral principles. By doing so, the municipality hopes to create a society where mutual respect, accountability and discipline are prioritized,” he said.

The launch saw participation of various stakeholders, including SAPS, traditional leadership, NGO’s and governmental departments, each nominating a representative to form a working committee. “The selected representatives read and signed a pledge to uphold the principles of the MRM. However, due to the absence of some organizations, the election of the executive committee has been postponed to next Monday, March 30. The second session aims to finalize leadership appointments, ensuring all relevant parties are included in the decision-making process,” Magubane said.

He applauded the initiative, stressing that tackling social ills at the root is crucial for sustainable progress. He also pointed out that addressing these issues would enhance service delivery, as resources will be effectively utilized in a more disciplined and responsible society. “The launch marks the beginning of a long-term commitment by the municipality to restore moral values and create a healthier, more unified community. With continued engagement from all stakeholders, the Moral Regeneration Movement is set to play a key role in fostering ethical leadership and responsible citizenship,” Magubane concluded.

During the event, stakeholders had the opportunity to express their concerns about the moral decline of communities. They highlighted various social issues necessitating immediate action, reinforcing the importance of the MRM
