The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (CALM) has, officially handing over a new footbridge to the community of  E-Ngodini in Mpuluzi.

The purpose of this initiative is to eliminate the dangers posed to the community, particularly school children, during the rainy seasons.

According to the CALM spokesperson, Thapelo Phetla, the municipality undertook a thorough assessment of the community’s needs and subsequently engaged a contractor to construct a safe and reliable footbridge.

“Funding for the project was sourced from the municipal disaster recovery grant, with additional support from the municipality itself. Measuring an impressive 104 meters, almost the size of a sports field, the footbridge was completed in just three months, showcasing the efficiency and dedication of the project team. The total cost of the project amounted to R1.5 million with R1 million rand contributed by the disaster recovery grant and the remainder funded by the municipality,” he said.

Phetla also said the footbridge was officially completed on March 11, with some community members already benefiting from its use. The municipality has assured the community of the bridge’s safety and has committed to its maintenance when needed.

“Notably, the project has also created job opportunities for five community members, contributing to local economic development. The ceremony marking the handover of the footbridge was attended by the Executive Mayor of the CALM Daniel Nkosi, who expressed gratitude for the effective work done.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality Executive Mayor, Walter Mngomezulu, also commended the project, highlighting its positive impact on the community, especially in ensuring that learners can safely access schools.
