Amahle Malaza.

The community of Elukwatini is in mourning following the tragic death of 13-year-old Amahle Malaza, a learner at Takeni Secondary School, who allegedly died by suicide.

According to her family, Amahle’s death is linked to ongoing bullying she experienced at school.

Her mother said she rushed to the school after being informed that her daughter was unwell. Upon arrival, she attempted to assist Amahle, but claims that teachers present did not intervene to help.

It is further alleged that when questioned, one teacher stated that Department of Education (DoE) policy prohibits staff from transporting learners to hospital in their private vehicles. Amahle reportedly passed away on the school premises.

The family revealed that Amahle left behind a note explaining her decision and identifying those who had allegedly bullied her.

The incident has raised serious concerns within the community regarding learner safety, how bullying complaints are handled, and the adequacy of emergency response procedures in schools.

The grieving family is now calling on the Mpumalanga DoE to provide clarity on protocols that teachers must follow when a learner requires urgent medical attention.

At the time of publication, the DoE had not responded to requests for comment.

Social workers have since been deployed to provide support to both the bereaved family and learners at Takeni Secondary School.
