The Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, visited the Gugulethu St Benedict’s Home for the old age people in Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality to mark the beginning of Mandela Month. This annual event is a national celebration and commemoration of the late former president, Nelson Mandela.
The purpose of Cllr Mngomezulu’s visit was multifaceted. He aimed to assess the living conditions and hygiene standards at the home, check on the well-being of the elderly residents, and understand how they coped during the COVID-19 pandemic when visitor restrictions were in place. Additionally, the mayor sought to identify any resources needed to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the elderly.

In honour of Mandela Day’s 67-minute tradition, Cllr Mngomezulu spent time engaging with the elders, listening to their challenges, and discussing the operational difficulties faced by the old age home. As part of his commitment, he donated cleaning materials to support the home’s upkeep.
During his address, the executive mayor acknowledged the financial struggles faced by Gugulethu St Benedict’s Home for the Aged, an NPO reliant solely on grants.
He pledged to seek financial assistance by liaising with other departments to ensure the home’s sustainability and the well-being of its residents.

Cllr Mngomezulu’s visit not only highlighted the importance of supporting the elderly but also underscored the collective spirit of Mandela Month, encouraging community involvement and support for those in need.
