Daniel Nkomo
The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sitting in Breyten has sentenced Anele Daniel Nkomo (30) to two life imprisonment terms and an additional 22 years behind bars for the brutal rape and murder of his elderly employer, Catherina Petronella Kruger (70), in Grootvlei.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mpumalanga spokesperson Monica Nyuswa, Nkomo, who worked for the deceased as a general worker, pleaded guilty to charges of housebreaking with intent to rob, rape, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Through a plea statement read by his legal representative, Nkomo admitted that towards the end of November 2023, he contacted Kruger requesting money to buy necessities for the festive season. When she was unable to assist him financially, he decided to go to her residence on December 30 to demand money.
“Upon arrival, he forcibly broke into the house and continued demanding money from the deceased. He then assaulted her by striking her with a stone, raped her, and stabbed her multiple times until she succumbed to her injuries. Thereafter, he fled the scene with the deceased’s valuable items, including a cellphone, wallet, and air pistol, using the deceased’s vehicle to escape,” said Nyuswa.
She added that while driving at high speed, Nkomo encountered a police vehicle, which he overtook before losing control of the stolen vehicle, causing it to overturn. He sustained serious injuries in the crash.
“When questioned by the police, he failed to provide satisfactory answers. Instead, he apologised and falsely claimed that he had borrowed the vehicle. Further investigation uncovered the crimes he had committed, leading to his arrest,” Nyuswa said.
During sentencing proceedings, Senior State Advocate Themba Lusenga argued that the robbery, rape and murder of a defenceless elderly woman was an act of cowardice and extreme brutality. He submitted that the accused deserved the harshest possible punishment.
The court found no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify deviating from the prescribed minimum sentences.
Nkomo was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, life imprisonment for murder, seven years for housebreaking with intent to rob, and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The NPA said the sentence reaffirms the value of human life and demonstrates its commitment to prosecuting violent crimes, particularly those involving vulnerable victims and abuse of trust.
